Matt Drury

Matt Drury

Owner, Funeral Director

Matt had wanted to be a Funeral Director from a young age, it was in his early twenties that he entered the funeral industry. Lathangue and Skwarchuk Funeral Homes in Bradford gave Matt his start by allowing him in to observe and assist with various duties over the course of 1996. In 1997 Matt then was offered a part time position at Steckley-Gooderham Inc., Barrie to continue helping those in need. Matt was accepted to Humber College's Funeral Education Program in 1998. Steckley-Gooderham Inc. offered an apprenticeship and then full-time employment as a licensed funeral director. In 2006 Matt returned to Skwarchuk Funeral Homes until 2008 when he was offered employment at Adams Funeral Home in Barrie. He served families there until 2020 when he and his wife Cindy opened Legacy Funeral and Cremation Services Inc. in Barrie.

Growing up in New Tecumseth, and living in Barrie since 1999, Matt knows how important small-town service is. Although Barrie is large, it is still a small town at heart. Matt and Cindy felt led to open Legacy Funeral Home to serve the families of Barrie and area with honesty, integrity, professionalism and fair prices.

Matt is active at his local church and has volunteered with Barrie Minor Baseball Association, coaching for many years and sitting on the Board of Directors for a term. The whole Drury family are avid baseball fans and love the time they spend at the park cheering on their beloved Barrie Baycats while cultivating relationships with other fans.

Community and supporting local business is important to Matt. Locally he is a member of the Barrie Chamber of Commerce and BNI. He looks for ways to encourage and support locally owned small businesses and charities.

Both Matt and Cindy are from a long line of generations living and working in Simcoe County.  Matt and Cindy reside in Barrie with their children Hannah and Josh, who will also be working at the funeral home carrying out various duties.

Bernice Huitema

Bernice Huitema

Pianist

Born and raised in Smithers, a small northern town in British Columbia, is where Bernice resided until moving to Barrie in 1989 to study Visual Art and Graphic Design at Georgian College. While in Barrie she stayed with a family from her church, it was there that she met and married her husband Mike. They have raised four sons together and enjoy living life in Essa County, especially after receiving the recent gift of a grandson!

Bernice had studied music as a young person and had taken part in accompanying choirs throughout her university years. She has always enjoyed playing music for any occasion and has been a church pianist for almost 40 years, both out west and here in Ontario.

Bernice plays piano for Covenant Church, Barrie on a regular basis. She has accompanied many voice students and other instrumentalists for local music festivals. She continues to play for the weddings and funerals that take place at her church and finds it a joy to take part in their celebrations while giving comfort during times of grieving.

We are truly blessed to have Bernice share her talents here at Legacy Funeral Home as she brings comfort to the families that we serve.
