In Loving Memory of James Woollett

James Woollett was born on August 29, 1943, to parents Norman and Jessie Woollett (both deceased). Although he loved to tell the charming tale of being born in the back of his parents' flower shop, James made his grand entrance into the world at Toronto Grace Hospital on Church Street, Toronto—a location fittingly nestled in the heart of Toronto’s gay village.

James leaves behind his beloved husband of 30 years, David Drinkwalter, and his cherished Pomeranian, Louie. He will also be deeply missed by his dear cousin, Christine, and the many friends and family who were touched by his warm and vibrant spirit. James was predeceased by numerous much-loved Pomeranians and orange cats, who undoubtedly are now joyfully reunited with him.

A Life of Passion and Talent

James was a devoted son with a loving heart who discovered his passion for figure skating at a young age. Inspired by an ice show he attended with his grandmother, James was equally drawn to the glittering sequins and the athletic artistry of the sport. He trained tirelessly, rising to become one of the top male single skaters in Canada.

Among his many achievements, James was the Ontario Novice and Junior Champion, placed third at Junior Nationals, and claimed victory in two Canadian American competitions in Lake Placid, New York. His signature program, skated to *Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini* by Rachmaninoff, garnered him several medals. And would always bring a tear to his eye whenever he would hear the music

After his skating career, James turned his focus to floristry, a calling that spanned over 60 years. Working in the family flower shop brought James immense joy and purpose, even while facing the challenges of cancer and dementia later in life. The shop remained his happy place, where he would gleefully trim roses, finding comfort in his routines and passion for the craft.

A Pioneer and Advocate

James was also a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights, participating in Toronto’s first pride marches in the 1970s. He played an instrumental role in the founding and growth of the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto, which has been a cornerstone for LGBTQ+ faith and community in the city. His advocacy and faith were constants in his life, and James was unafraid of the end, looking forward to reuniting with his mother and the pets who had gone before him.

The Joys of Tennis and Friendship

Later in life, James discovered the joys of tennis, quickly applying the same drive and discipline that defined his skating years to become a skilled senior player. He proudly displayed several doubles trophies won alongside his husband, David. However, his greatest treasures were the lifelong friendships he built through the Toronto Lesbian and Gay Tennis Association and the Midhurst Tennis Club.

 A Gentle Spirit, Forever Remembered

James’ gentle and loving spirit left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. He was deeply grateful for the friendships of Robbie and Alain Irvine, John Dow, and Ray Pollard. And the unwavering support of his in-laws Deece, Deb, Janice, and their families. A special farewell goes out to the cherished members of the “Possum Club.”

 A Celebration of Life

A gathering to share memories and celebrate James’ incredible life will be announced soon. In lieu of flowers, donations to your local Alzheimer Society or Hospice Simcoe would be greatly appreciated. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the many healthcare professionals who offered care and support in James’ later years.

 Final Words

James’ parting message to the world: "Be kind, stay positive, and adopt a rescue pet."

This homage beautifully captures James’ remarkable life and the countless ways he brought joy, love, and inspiration to those around him. May his memory live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
