Gordon Baker
July 29th, 1930 – February 19th, 2025
It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Gordon Baker, at Woods Park Care Centre in Barrie, Ontario, on February 19th, 2025. Gordon was in his 95th year. Gordon was born in the village of Mayfield in East Sussex, England and immigrated to Canada with his parents and younger brother in 1947.
We will remember Gordon for his kind, gentle spirit and for the enthusiasm he had for making memories with family and friends. Gordon was predeceased by his father James, mother Rosie, and brother Brian. He is survived by his nephew James Ward Baker of Port Alberni, British Columbia and James’s two children, Brenna and Alexander.
Gordon was known for making spontaneous road trips, with his family and friends. “Gordie” as some knew him as, was always a good sport and easy going. Gordon loved to visit, drop in on friends and lend a helping hand. He was a loyal and compassionate man. He loved a good joke and always wore a smile.
Gordon’s family purchased a farm in Innisfil, Ontario when they came to Canada, where he enjoyed that lifestyle for some time before he ventured off to start his own working career as a talented industrial mechanic, millwright.
He owned a metal lathe and milling machine, creating several custom machinery parts over the years, most of them donated to friends and family out of the goodness of his heart. In the 1980’s, Gordon developed an interest in computers, their programming and hardware; he shared this hobby with his nephew, James Baker. Gordon also took to automobiles, owning some iconic cars over the years, including a 1968 Corvette convertible. One would find Gordon at local and international car or antique shows several times a year and he also attended some air shows, in the company of close friends or family. He was a lifetime member of the Georgian Bay Steam Club where he volunteered his time and enjoyed displaying his collection of antique tractors.
After a career at a few local food and drink companies, including Canada Dry, Salada Foods and Kelloggs, Gordon was fortunate enough to retire at the age of 65 from the Molson Brewery Company. He later made a brief return to the workforce, serving as a mechanic at Moonstone Mechanical. Throughout his working career, he developed many lifelong friendships that he cherished a great deal.
Gordon was a friend to all, and a brother by heart. His laughter, love and loyalty will never be forgotten; may he rest in peace.
