Elisabeth Maria Van der Meulen (nee Kriek), a long-term Barrie resident, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, December 6 at the IOOF branch of the Royal Victoria Hospital from complications arising out of a severe bladder infection. She was predeceased by her daughter, Mary, and her brother Gerhard; and survived by her granddaughter Harmony Thompson, her brother Peter Kriek, and her informally adopted son, Michael. Born in Holland on October 21, 1942, in the Middle of a Nazi bombing raid over Rotterdam, Elisabeth was born with a disability which made it very hard for her to walk. She bravely fought this disability all her life, sometimes walking quite independently, but later using canes and finally a wheelchair. She will be remembered for her resolute determination…she never, no never gave up; her love and care for anyone who somehow did not fit in with the crowd; her skills with arts and crafts; and her passionate understanding and love of classical music.
We thank you for your friendship and committed faith in Christ, Elisabeth. It sustained you well. You truly were not just part of the crowd, but one of us. We love you! We wish you a fond farewell. Until we meet again!
Friends will be received at Legacy Funeral Home, 55 Cedar Pointe Drive, Barrie (parking and entrance on Hwy 400 side of building) on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 1 p.m. until time of Elisabeth's Celebration of Life at 2 o'clock p.m.
